Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

An LMIA is a special approval an employer in Canada may need before they can hire a foreign worker. It shows that the employer needs to hire someone from outside Canada because no one in Canada can do the job.

To get a positive LMIA, you need to show that no Canadian worker can do the job you’re offering. The government also looks at whether the job will create or keep other jobs, and whether it helps fill a gap in the workforce. They also check if the salary and job conditions are fair.

If your LMIA is refused, you can’t formally appeal, but you can apply again and provide more information or fix any issues. Sometimes, the government may review the decision if they think they made a mistake or if you request it.
